Local Maine News Covers the Fight Against Coastal Erosion

We are absolutely thrilled and humbled! WMTW Channel 8 recently aired a fantastic segment on "Hometown Maine" profiling Scott Kern and his desperate, daily, and often "cuckoo" battle against rising seas on his tiny Casco Bay island.

The reporter, Jacob Murphy, beautifully captured the essence of what we're trying to do here: using our hands, trash, and sheer will to save a piece of the Maine coast.

More Than Just a "Boring Nature Show"

Scott, the original Maniac Men visionary, doesn't just see a half-acre island; he calls it "Planet Sand," and as he puts it, he's building a "VIDEO GAME EMPIRE, A POST-APOCALYPTIC LIFE HERE, inspired by the video games he's played.

The WMTW segment highlights the incredible resourcefulness of the project: Scott built his entire structure using used materials and reclaimed building supply trash he collected, declaring: "THIS WHOLE STRUCTURE WOULD BE IN A LANDFILL UP NORTH IF I DIDN'T DO THIS."

He's currently in the process of constructing what he jokingly calls "THE GREAT WALL OF PLANET SAND"—a perma-building solution made of rocks and debris, aimed at stopping the relentless force of the ocean.

The Maniac Men Metaphor: Find Your Island

The story is about more than just fighting coastal erosion; it’s about a personal battle. The segment touches upon Scott’s lifelong struggle with addiction, which gives his work a profound sense of purpose.

As Scott says in the interview, the drive behind the Maniac Men brand is to show that success is possible after any struggle: "I WANT TO SHOW THE WORLD THAT SOMEONE CAN BE THAT SICK... BUT THEN TO SUCCEED ON TO DOING SOMETHING LIKE THIS."

He hopes the island can be a metaphor for anyone else:

"What's the island in your life? It could be your kids, your career. It could be art, music, nature, camping... I HAD TO FIND SOMETHING IN MY LIFE BIGGER THAN MY ADDICTION."
